DISOBEDIENT CHILDREN
NT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
We see a living room, cluttered with toys and books. A 9-year-old child, LUCAS, is sitting on the couch, playing video games. His mother, KAREN, enters the room.
KAREN
Lucas, I need you to turn off the game and clean up this room. Your friends are coming over later and we need the place to be presentable.
LUCAS
(slouching on the couch)
I'll clean it later. Can't you see I'm busy right now?
KAREN
(sternly)
Lucas, I asked you to clean up now. It's not a request, it's a command.
LUCAS
(rolling his eyes)
Fine. Whatever.
Lucas grudgingly turns off the game and starts picking up toys. Karen watches him for a moment, then goes into the kitchen. Lucas continues cleaning, but as he does, he starts muttering to himself.
LUCAS
(under his breath)
Stupid Mom, always nagging me about cleaning up. I wish she'd just leave me alone.
Karen overhears Lucas' muttering and comes back into the living room.
KAREN
(angrily)
Excuse me? What did you say?
LUCAS
(defiantly)
I said I wish you'd leave me alone. You're always telling me what to do.
KAREN
(furious)
How dare you speak to me like that? I am your mother, and you will show me respect!
LUCAS
(mocking)
Respect? Why should I respect you? You're always on my case.
KAREN
(shouting)
That's it, young man! I have had enough of your disrespect. You are grounded for the rest of the day!
LUCAS
(throwing a tantrum)
What? That's not fair! You can't ground me!
KAREN
(calmly)
Oh, but I can. And I will. And if you don't start showing me the respect I deserve, there will be more consequences to come.
Lucas grumbles and storms off to his room. Karen watches him go, her face a mix of anger and sadness.
